We're always on the lookout for bold, expertly executed work that brings something fresh to the shelf. Before you send us your manuscript, here's everything you need to know.
We are open to all genres, with a current sweet spot in nonfiction, especially actionable, scientifically minded, or unconventional topics. We are also actively building our fiction catalogue, so fiction submissions are very welcome; we're just a little newer to that side of the house.
We prefer manuscripts that are relatively polished, but we're not rigid about that. We care far more about idea and execution than about pristine grammar at the submission stage. Skill can be refined; a compelling premise and a clear voice cannot be taught. If we love your concept, we'll take you through a thorough editing phase with our team.
Not a ghostwriting publisher. We do not write books for clients, and we do not charge ghostwriting fees. We only accept finished, authored manuscripts. Whether you wrote it yourself or engaged a ghostwriter to help you draft it is your business, but the final work must be your vision and your name on the cover.
You must include one of the following two options.
Your full, complete manuscript, ready to be read start to finish.
The first three chapters, plus a one page synopsis of the entire book, a query letter introducing yourself and your work, and a full outline of the remaining chapters.
Microsoft Word (.docx), or LibreOffice ODT if you use open source software. We do not accept PDFs for initial submissions.
Send all submissions to our editor and submissions coordinator, Sam Edwards, at:
submissions@hanscombebooks.com
Please include "Manuscript Submission: [Your Title]" in the subject line.
Email Your SubmissionWe respond to every single submission. No silent rejections, no black holes. We aim to get back to you as quickly as possible, but please allow up to four weeks for a full response. If we're running faster, you'll hear from us sooner.
Yes, we accept simultaneous submissions. Just let us know in your query letter if your manuscript is under consideration elsewhere.
We do not offer advances against royalties. Instead, we split all net royalties 50/50 between Hanscombe Books and the author.
No. We do not charge any fees for editing, design, or marketing. We only edit and produce books we have already accepted, because we believe in investing in our authors, not charging them.
It enters our continuous marketing rotation. We don't just promote the "lead" title of the season; we promote every active title in our catalogue, strategically and consistently, because your book deserves a long life, not a fleeting moment.
Before you hit send: please make sure your manuscript is as complete as you can make it, and that you've included all required materials for your chosen option.
